Babu K Verghese, Chairman
Mr Babu K. Verghese is the founder promoter and currently the Chairman of Avântt Business Solutions, Chennai – a Technical and Management Consultancy Organization – which, interse, is chiefly focused on techno economic evaluation and implementation of projects in the process industry (be it grass root, upgradation, capacity augmentation, de-bottlenecking). The extensive exposure gained by Mr. Verghese over the past 4 decades, both nationally and internationally, in this specific field augurs well for Avantt.
Mr Verghese is academically a Chemical Engineer, having obtained his degree in Bachelor of Technology in 1968 from the erstwhile University of Madras, India, with Distinction and First Rank.
Started his professional career as an Assistant Engineer at the Ammonia/Urea Complex of Fertilizers and Chemicals Travancore Limited (FACT), Kerala in 1968. Mr Verghese moved to SPIC, a fertilizer major in India, in 1972. During his tenure at SPIC, he played a key role as Project/Shift Engineer, in the implementation, commissioning and operation of SPIC’s Ammonia and Urea Plants. In 1977, leading a team of Process and Maintenance Engineers, he went on deputation for implementation and commissioning of the two Ammonia Plants at National Fertilizers Limited at Bhatinda, India and at Panipat, India. On return in 1980, as Project Manager, he implemented the various upgradation/debottlenecking jobs in SPIC’s Ammonia plant.
During his stint at SPIC’s Group Company, Tamilnadu Petroproducts Limited (TPL) from 1984 to 1992, Mr Verghese, as TPL’s Executive Director, was the avant-garde in implementation and commissioning of TPL’s Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB) Plant, well ahead of schedule. His technical expertise facilitated the LAB Plant surpass the 100 per cent production mark in the very first year of its operation, with the best specific consumption norms among LAB Plants world over – a benchmark.
Moving over to Jordan in 1992 to head SPIC’s US$ 250 Million overseas joint venture, Indo-Jordan Chemicals Company Limited (IJC), Mr Verghese, in his capacity as IJC’s Deputy Chairman & Managing Director, played the pivotal role in the implementation / commissioning of IJC’s grassroot Phosphoric Acid Complex at Eshidiya. He ensured the timely availing of US$ 150 Million loan package under the umbrella of International Finance Corporation (IFC), Washington, and under his dynamic leadership, the project was mechanically completed well before the scheduled date and well within the budgeted outlay. Since its commissioning in 1997, Mr. Verghese ably steered the company to surpass the 100 per cent capacity utilization year after year. IJC became the first company in Jordan to declare dividend to its shareholders in its very first year of operation. It is easily the best performing Phosphoric Acid plant on a global basis.
Inducted into SPIC’s Board as a Director in July 2000, Mr Verghese, subsequently, in October 2001, was made the Deputy Managing Director of SPIC on its Board and in April 2002 was elevated as the Managing Director of the Company. Incidentally, he was also a Director on the Board of ICS, Senegal, Africa for 6 years.
He superannuated from SPIC in September 2007 and has since provided independent Project Consultancy Services to both process and non-process industries. Inspired by the success in the same, in 2010, he promoted Avântt Business Solutions.
